  • 0 Reap the Mental Health Benefits of Pet Ownership as a Senior

Image by Pexels Images Reap the Mental Health Benefits of Pet Ownership as a Senior Growing old can be a difficult process, physically and mentally. For many, the golden years tend to become less golden as they age, and feelings of loneliness and isolation can be tough to battle. However, studies show that pets can significantly improve the mental, emotional, and physical health of seniors. In this article, Enjoying Aging explores how pets can do much more than just be our furry companions.   Living a Purposeful Life One of the biggest challenges that seniors face is finding purpose and motivation in their daily activities. Particularly when they are retired, seniors can often feel unsure of how to fill their hours. Many feel uneasy or unfulfilled when they have nothing to do or can't contribute to society anymore. Having a pet can give seniors a sense of purpose, responsibility, and something to care for rather than sitting around feeling useless. By having a pet to care for, seniors can feel they are needed and that their life continues to hold value.   Relief From Feelings of Loneliness and Isolation Another challenge that seniors often struggle to overcome is loneliness and isolation. When living alone, seniors can often feel that their world is small and insignificant, especially when their family and friends are busy or live far away. Pets provide them with constant companionship and can help to alleviate this feeling of loneliness. A pet's presence helps to create a more engaging home environment and provides seniors with someone to talk to and spend time with.   Encouraging Being Active It's essential to keep the body and mind active when aging and some seniors lose interest in exercising or find it difficult to maintain a healthy routine. Pets, especially dogs, can help in this regard because they always need to exercise, and going for walks together can benefit both the owner and the pet. Walking a dog can promote physical activity, which is essential in preventing many age-related health issues, such as obesity and diabetes. A brisk morning and evening walk with your four-legged friend will not only provide both of you with much-needed exercise but also offer an opportunity to meet neighbors on a similar quest.   Enhancing Social Interaction Pets can encourage social interaction with others, which is essential for any age group. They provide an excellent conversation starter and common ground for seniors, creating opportunities for socializing and meeting new people. Moreover, spending time with pets can also improve the mood of seniors, making them more positive   Enjoying Senior Living Find a Senior Living Facility Near You. Another benefit of meeting other like-minded people is finding someone trustworthy to leave your companion with while you go off to take care of much-needed business. Having to worry about your pet while you're gone adds unnecessary stress and having someone you can trust to come and let your dog out at different times of the day can put your mind at ease. It can also give seniors a sense of purpose and responsibility if they are the ones asked for help by someone else in need.   Providing Stress Relief It may seem odd to some that a retired person would experience stress; they no longer have the worries or pressures of work, right? Believe it or not, stress is just as prevalent in seniors as it is in any other age group. Pets, especially dogs, have been shown to have a healing effect on hospital patients and help speed up the recovery process. A major benefit of owning a pet is the stress-relieving effects a pet provides. Just by petting a dog or cat, seniors can instantly feel calmer and more relaxed.     Pets Require Special Care and the Right Food We've talked a lot about the amazing benefits seniors receive from pet ownership but what about what they should do for them in return? Pets are an important part of our lives and they deserve special care. One way to show that we care is by purchasing the right food for them. Imagine your furry friend enjoying lip-smacking kibble dog food, it's a simple way to make them happy and healthy. Another thing we advise to have on hand at all times is treats. Find the right kind of treat for your companion and watch how they brighten up the darkest days. They are also an excellent training tool when trying to get them to mind you when you are out with other owners.   Better Immune System Studies have found that owning pets promotes a better immune system. Seniors are especially susceptible to illness, and pets can provide a way to fight off sickness. Researchers have discovered that children who grew up with dogs and cats had a more robust immune system against allergies, and the same goes for seniors. Pets can expose seniors to different bacteria that can help to bolster their immune systems. However, this only applies if you are not already suffering from a weakened immune system. The human body has a remarkable way of fighting off viral and bacterial infections but like everything else, if the immune system becomes compromised it may not be able to cope. It is always best to keep your pet and your environment clean. Wash your hands after each time you play with your furry friend and never let your pet lick you on the mouth.   Providing a Sense of Security Finally, owning a pet can provide a sense of security for seniors who live alone. Pets can act as home security systems or even as a companions during the night-time hours. Pets can have a significant impact on the mental, emotional, and physical health of seniors. They can provide a sense of purpose and responsibility, relieve stress, offer companionship, bolster the immune system, and help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation. Seniors can greatly benefit from owning a pet, and it's essential to consider the rewards of having these furry companions in their lives.   Visit Enjoying Aging for a wide variety of articles and resources that matter to seniors!   A special thank you to Lydia Chan at alzheimerscaregiver.net for contributing this article.   If you enjoyed this article, or have a topic you would like to suggest for a new article, please leave a comment in the form below.

  • 0 A Senior's Guide to Adopting a Pet

    0.00 out of 0 votes

A Senior's Guide to Adopting a Pet Are you a senior looking to adopt a new pet? Perhaps you're retired and have some extra time on your hands and are thinking about starting a pet-sitting business. Or maybe you simply want the companionship that comes with owning a pet. Assuming you have the physical ability, financial resources, and suitable living arrangements, this guide covers some of the things you should know before taking the plunge into pet ownership as a senior citizen!   The Different Types of Pets to Consider There are so many different types of pets out there, and it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. If you're keen on having a furry friend, dogs and cats are always popular choices. But if you're looking for something with a little lower maintenance, consider getting a fish or reptile instead. Hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits also make great starter pets for seniors.   Dogs Dogs require daily walks and plenty of playtimes. They must also be brushed regularly and require regular trips to the groomer (and vet!). If you're not up for all that upkeep, consider getting a smaller dog breed that doesn't shed much fur. Wondering about a dog’s breed? Use a breed-identifying app to accurately guess the breed and then match their needs to your abilities, or capabilities. If, for example, you are a 90-pound female, it may not be the best idea to get a 120-pound dog. Also, if you suffer from an illness (knee pain, back pain, arthritis, etc.) that prevents you from being able to give a high-energy pet the attention it needs, consider a dog with lower energy.   Cats Cats are relatively low-maintenance compared to dogs; they don't need to be walked and can often be left alone for long periods of time while still being happy and healthy. That said, they do require regular trips to the vet and routine grooming (or at least some help with shedding!). And don't forget the litter box! Cats can also get bored easily and take out their frustration on your walls, door frames, furniture, etc. Always keep plenty of toys around as well as a couple of good scratching posts for them to keep their claws sharp when you're not home.   Fish Fish make great starter pets because they're relatively easy to care for — all they need is clean water and regular feedings. However, they don't provide the same level of companionship as other pets such as dogs or cats. Larger aquariums can be a beautiful addition to any décor but they are not as easy to move as a sofa or chair so find the best spot for them when you first bring them home. You should also know that some species don't get along very well with others. Make sure that all of your fish are compatible or you might come home and find that the expensive fish you just purchased was someone's lunch.   Enjoying Senior Living Find a Senior Living Facility Near You. Learn More Digital Marketing Offers Three Opportunities To Reach Your Audience Studies show that the majority of people will use their phones to search for content that addresses their current needs and then switch to their computers for more in-depth research before making final decisions or purchases. The upside to this is you have three opportunities to reach them. All of our Websites are developed to work flawlessly on all three platforms. Learn More Hamsters/Guinea Pigs/Rabbits These small mammals make great starter pets because they don't need as much space as larger animals like dogs or cats. And while they can be very entertaining watching them get their exercise on the hamster wheel, they do have some maintenance needs. You must keep their cage clean at all times and if they ever get out they can be surprisingly difficult to find. They don't need walks or frequent trips to the vet, but they do need routine checkups. They require a vet that specializes in other types of animals, and since most veterinarians only see dogs and cats, make sure there is a specialty vet close by before taking one in as a pet.   Birds Birds can be one of the most soothing creatures you'll ever own. Listening to their gentle chirps or cooing in the morning can help you wake with a song in your heart. Depending on the species they can be very colorful and quite pleasing to watch. Some can become very attached to their human counterparts and get very excited when they get home. It is a good idea if you plan to let them out of their cage occasionally that you have their wings clipped so they don't fly away. Like hamsters or guinea pigs, they have similar maintenance requirements with regular cage cleaning and routine checkups from a vet that specializes in birds.     Reptiles Like fish, reptiles are also low-maintenance, but they do require special care when it comes to feeding and housing them correctly. Some reptiles can also carry bacteria that may be harmful to humans, so it's important to do your research before bringing one home. The food requirements of some reptiles can be a challenge. If the primary food source for your animal is other live animals, crickets, mice, grubs, etc., make sure you have the ability to house and care for them as well as your pet.   Maintaining Your Pet's Health and Happiness Now that you've decided which type of pet is right for you, it's essential to think about how you will keep them healthy and happy. Here are some tips:   Regular Vet Checkups All pets, regardless of whether they're indoor or outdoor animals, should see the veterinarian at least once a year for routine checkups and vaccinations. This is especially important for older animals that may not have as strong of an immune system as they did when they were younger.   Proper Nutrition It's essential to feed your pet a nutritious diet that meets its specific needs; talk to your vet about what type of food is best for your animal friend. For example, cats require more protein than dogs because they're obligate carnivores; dogs are omnivores and can digest both plant-based and meat-based proteins. Grain-free dried dog food is sure to please. Be sure to provide dogs with a healthier, more natural diet free from processed grains and fillers, while still ensuring they get all the necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.   Exercise Animals need exercise just like humans. Make sure your pet gets plenty of activity every day whether that means going on walks or runs (if they're dogs), playing with toys (if they're cats), or simply having some time out of their cage or aquarium (if they're small mammals or reptiles). Fish get all the exercise they need just by swimming around; however, make sure their aquarium is large enough to support them.   Pet Insurance Pet insurance is a policy that provides coverage for unexpected medical costs associated with your pet, including veterinary visits, surgery, emergency care, and more. The premiums you pay cover not only the cost of treatment but also any related expenses such as prescriptions, tests, X-rays, and hospitalization. With an appropriate policy in place, pet owners can rest assured knowing their furry family members will be taken care of should any health issues arise.   Longevity This may not be a topic most of us want to think about but the longevity of the animal should also be considered when thinking about getting a new pet. This is not as important if you are still in your early retirement years but something that should be thought about if you are approaching your seventies or eighties. In many ways, we can become very attached to our cuddly friends and if they go before us it can lead to depression and all the negative effects it can have on the body. They too can become dependent on and attached to us, leading to similar results in them. While there is no way to know when that time will come for either party, it is a good idea to plan ahead. Some animals, some birds and reptiles, for example, can live 70 to 80 years which could equal a lifetime commitment. Do some research and find a match that will not leave either of you behind for very long, or stick to a pet that has a less attachment factor like fish or reptiles. Also, you should make sure you have solid plans for who would take care of your friend in the event you go first.   Wrapping Up Adopting a pet as a senior citizen comes with its own set of challenges and benefits. Studies show that pet owners live longer, healthier, and less stressful lives, but it will be more enjoyable with some careful planning! Be sure to choose an animal and breed that fits well with your lifestyle and personality traits. Also, remember that all pets require regular vet checkups, nutritious food, and exercise. With these things in mind, you'll be well on your way toward providing a forever home for an animal in need! Have dinner parties with close friends and family members who live nearby, or plan weekend trips with those who don't live close enough for regular visits. Making solid connections with people who share similar interests will keep loneliness at bay during this stage in life.   Volunteering Consider spending some time volunteering at local organizations that speak to your passions and interests so that you can contribute meaningfully toward making positive change in society, as well as get involved in something bigger than yourself. Volunteering is a fulfilling outlet for empty nesters seeking meaningful engagement outside their home.   Starting a Business Empty nesters looking to start a business have many unique advantages compared to those entering the entrepreneurial world early in life. With time and financial freedom, you can devote more attention to building and growing your own business. • 0 Cheap, Cheerful Living: Budgeting Tips for Seniors on a Fixed Income

    0.00 out of 0 votes

Image by Pexels Images Cheap, Cheerful Living: Budgeting Tips for Seniors on a Fixed Income For many seniors on a fixed income, the cost of living can outweigh our means and threaten our financial futures. When this happens, it can help to make a few adjustments, thus ensuring comfortable living and protecting our bottom line.   Planning When you're looking to create healthier finances and a more manageable lifestyle, it's a good idea to plan well in advance, aiming to free up cash and avoid pitfalls further down the line. Assess costs: Your first point of action is to review your outgoings and identify exactly where you could be losing money. This means collecting together bank statements from the last 12 months and scrutinizing these for unconscious spending habits and potential overspending. Prioritize: As we review our finances, it's important to find areas of compromise. To help, make sure you've written out your priorities clearly and earmarked lifestyle choices that can be dropped if necessary. Budget: Writing a new budget for yourself is an excellent way to set the tone for healthier finances. This should include recurring costs, averages for monthly living (fuel, utilities, food, housing, and more), as well as projected outgoings for the future. You can set speculative estimates and also targets for yourself that you know you'll need to hit if you want to avoid dropping the things you enjoy.     Saving Sometimes, all you need to restore your balance sheet is a few clever tweaks to your lifestyle. Here are some ideas to get you started. Identify alternatives: When you have a formulaic daily routine, it's common to overlook cheaper alternatives when it comes to utilities, food, leisure, and more. Fortunately, the internet gives us a clearer overview of our options and the option to renegotiate contracts or seek out cheaper providers. Refinancing: To save on mortgage repayments, it could be a good idea to refinance your property, thereby decreasing equity in your home and freeing up cash or reducing your monthly payments. Wholesale: The majority of products we buy in grocery stores, mall stores, and hypermarkets are sold at an inflated price. If you want to save extra cash, it's often worth cutting out the middleman and buying from wholesale suppliers. Bulk purchases may prove costly in the short term but can save you thousands across the course of a year - better still, these can often be ordered and delivered directly to your home.   Supplementing If you have things you'd like to sell, an idea for a business, or a passion you'd like to pursue, age should never be a barrier. In the digital age, it's easier than ever to supplement your income - here are a few pointers to help. Enjoying Senior Living Find a Senior Living Facility Near You. Just be certain to read up on how to carry out the selling process safely. Part-time work: Many employers are looking for extra administrators, writers, accountants, and other help to contribute on a part-time basis. Check your options online and see if you can be of service. Entrepreneurship: It's easier than ever to start a business of your own, thanks to the vast array of online tools. This could not only supplement your income but also boost your mental & physical health, as well as connect you to new people. Consider venturing into consulting, tutoring, baking, or crafting as ideas.   With a few key adjustments, there should be no reason you can't enjoy your golden years free from financial worry. • 0 Living Your Dream in Your Golden Years: How to Become a Senior Entrepreneur

Living Your Dream in Your Golden Years: How to Become a Senior Entrepreneur You can become an entrepreneur at any age. Yet, as Forbes notes, starting a company later in life gives you more advantages and room for success. As an older professional, you have the experience to leverage that other entrepreneurs may not have. When you become an entrepreneur in your golden years, you can invest in your retirement by pursuing your passions. Staying active in retirement doesn't always mean exercising or attending social events. If you have a hobby that you enjoy sharing, why not turn it into a business?   Check Into Continuing Education If you feel you need to brush up on your business skills, look into online educational resources. Earning an online degree in business allows you to learn about management, accounting, entrepreneurship, and much more. Getting a business degree also adds to your credibility, and completing classes and tests online allows you to continue working on your enterprise without attending in person. As you explore your choices of programs, here's a good option that will enable you to complete a course in just five weeks.   Learn Your Target Market Before you can create a successful business, you have to identify your target market. Who do you want to tailor your products and services towards? Once you know your primary market, you can figure out how to target those people specifically. This is the first step in creating a marketing plan, which will guide you through your marketing development. While you may want to be a business that can reach a wide variety of clients, knowing how to narrow down your marketing will help you succeed. Consider the characteristics of your potential client and how you can reach them about the business. Also, think about reasons why they might buy from you. For example, if you start an eco-friendly business, use that to your advantage. Many want to help the environment and would instead support companies that take eco-friendliness seriously. Market yourself as a green company.     Explore the Internet for Promotion When marketing your business, look for low-cost tools. For instance, if you are working on a marketing project with multiple teams, you probably have an overflow of documents to deal with. Do not bother having various documents in different formats. Instead, merge everything into a PDF so you can keep all your documents in one file. You can use a PDF merging tool online to combine PDF pages and move the pages into the correct order. Enjoying Senior Living Find a Senior Living Facility Near You. Click On Your State To View Listings in Your Area. Find a Community Near You Content Marketing Offers the Highest Return On Investment Online, or content marketing and advertising, is currently the second-highest method of promoting businesses following only Television which, for now, remains in the number one position. For cost-effectiveness, and the ability to directly target your audience, nothing matches the ROI of digital marketing. Learn More Digital Marketing Offers Three Opportunities To Reach Your Audience Studies show that the majority of people will use their phones to search for content that addresses their current needs and then switch to their computers for more in-depth research before making final decisions or purchases. With three different platforms, computers, tablets, and phones, it is important to make sure your audience can follow your content and ads on any device. The upside to this is you have three opportunities to reach them. All of our Websites are developed to work flawlessly on all three platforms. Learn More   You should start working on your online presence if you aren't already online. The best way to promote your business online, and add credibility to your business, is with a Website that has a URL that reflects your business name. Your business Website allows you to provide information about your products or services, as well as background about yourself and why people should buy from you rather than your competitors. Contact us for a resource to help you build a professional Website for your business.   Using Social Media According to Lifespan, about 70% of people in the U.S. are on social media. Social media allows you to connect more personally with your customers. Social media platforms can also help you cultivate a following in your target demographic. For instance, older adults use Facebook, whereas younger people tend to be on TikTok. Social network sites like Facebook also allow you to advertise on the platform. If you have a business site, you can target the correct audience through this and other forms of online advertising. Digital marketing allows you to target large groups or individuals who share similar interests through multiple sources.   Find Partnerships With Other Businesses Look for businesses with a similar target audience to yours and create a partnership marketing relationship. Streamline Marketing explains that partnership marketing can boost your sales and benefit the other company too. For instance, you could collaborate with another business, host a charity or raffle, or create co-branded products. Marketing partnerships require you to network and build strategic relationships that could help boost your business. Partnerships could also include partnering with potential marketers. For instance, you could partner with a blogger with a similar demographic. He or she could review your product or service to help you gain more traction with potential clients. Another form of partnership, also known as 'Influencers' are reviews or recommendations for a product or service that come from people, often celebrities, that are considered trustworthy. An example of influencer marketing would be Tom Selleck who has become an icon for reverse mortgages on Television advertisements.   Apply What You Know and Keep Learning Becoming an entrepreneur later in life has a variety of different benefits. You have more age, wisdom, and experience on your side giving you an advantage over your younger competitors and the know-how to succeed in business. You understand the motivation, discipline, and focus it takes to stay on task and be productive. As a new entrepreneur, you may need to learn a few marketing tricks, go back to school to brush up on business concepts, which social media platform to choose, and how to market to your target audience. But you will put the same energy into these pursuits as you have with your previous endeavors and come through as a successful new entrepreneur.   If you need tips and resources to help you age well, be sure to spend some time exploring the different content provided by Enjoying Aging.   A special thank you to Sharon Wagner at seniorfriendly.info for contributing this article.   If you enjoyed this article, or have a topic you would like to suggest for a new article, please leave a comment in the form below.

Image via Pexels Planning a Move to Care for a Senior Loved One Caring for a senior loved one comes in many forms, from helping them remain social and active to assisting with daily tasks. If your loved one lives far away and can no longer care for themselves, it might be time to think about moving closer to ensure their safety and comfort. While it's a major life change, making a move will allow you to find out what your loved one's needs are so that you can better assist them, whether that means helping them downsize or find a nursing facility or home health provider. If they can no longer maintain their home, or if you need help selling your own house prior to the move, work with a local real estate pro. Then come up with a plan for the move itself and for the care of your loved one in the coming months. Read on for more information, presented by Enjoying Aging.   Simplify The Moving Process – Research And Secure A Mortgage With your loved one's needs on your mind–among other things–you don't want the move to pile onto your stress levels. The good news is, you can simplify the process quite a bit with a solid plan that includes doing some homework on the area you'll be moving to, figuring out where to find grocery stores, pharmacies, and gyms, and getting pre-approved for a home loan. This will not only give you peace of mind where your finances are concerned, but it will also allow you to make a quick purchase once you find the perfect home. Check your credit report and, if necessary, boost the score before applying for a loan by paying down debt and taking care of your bills on time.   Take A Look At Your Loved One's Living Situation Once you have your own home taken care of, it's time to thoroughly check your loved one's living situation to find out whether their home is a healthy, safe space for them. Many seniors find that their homes become more and more challenging to maintain over the years, which can lead to leaks, damage, and dangerous mold. If you suspect your loved one's house needs repairs, look for local resources that can help at low or no cost, and talk to your loved one about making a move. Age Space notes that not only is downsizing a great option for older adults who need less to take care of, but it can also help them save money and stay safe at the same time. One possibility is moving to a smaller space such as a rental home, condo, or apartment. There are plenty of options to choose from as it pertains to square footage, the age of the property, and the neighborhood. In fact, there are a number of different websites available that can help you find the perfect apartment for your needs and lifestyle. Experts have predicted that digital ads will surpass TV by 2025 and not look back. Learn More   Another consideration is apartment communities that are designed specifically for seniors. These are often far more affordable options than an assisted living facility yet still provide many similar benefits. In some cases, they will even make exceptions that allow a younger family member to live with an aging parent to facilitate their care needs.   Staying In Place Another option is to let your loved ones stay in the place they are most familiar with; their own home. If your intentions are to move to take care of them why make them move? In many cases, there is enough equity in their home to get them approved for a reverse mortgage. There is a lot of false information going around about this type of mortgage and while they are not the right choice for some, they can be the perfect solution for others.   Take Steps to Help Them Stay If your loved one needs help with daily tasks and their home is still in good shape, there are a few things you can do to help it stay that way. Making modifications is an easy way to help a senior age in place, and you can also clean, declutter, and take care of the exterior of the home. Simple chores such as sealing up cracks around windows or clearing the downspout of debris can go a long way toward preparing the house for cold weather, as can cleaning the gutters to prevent water from backing up against the roof or foundation. It's important to hire a pro for the latter, as they can perform a cleaning safely and quickly while checking for potential issues.   Be An Advocate One of the best things you can do for your senior loved one is to be an advocate for their rights and well-being, whether it's at a doctor's appointment or at an appointment to secure safe accommodations. The National Association of Realtors suggests familiarizing yourself with senior rights as they apply to fair housing and the code of ethics that realtors and landlords must abide by, which includes the inability to discriminate against an individual due to their race, sex, or disability, among other things.   Be A Negotiator You might not think of yourself as a natural negotiator, but when it comes to advocating for a senior loved one, negotiating skills can come in handy. Whether you're dealing with a healthcare provider, an insurance company, or a retirement community, it's important to be able to make your case and get what you want. That's not always easy, but there are some things you can do to improve your chances of success. First, it's important to stay focused on your goal. Don't get sidetracked by other issues, and be prepared to walk away if you're not getting what you want. It's also helpful to know what the other side is likely to offer and to have a realistic idea of what you're willing to accept. By being prepared and staying calm, you'll be more likely to get the outcome you're hoping for. In summary, lending your senior loved one a hand as it pertains to making a move may seem daunting, but by researching the new locality ahead of time, securing a mortgage, considering their living situation, and understanding future options, you both will be better equipped to execute your plan. Soon, they will be living comfortably in their new home to finish out their retirement years! • 0 What Seniors Need to Know About Pet-Friendly Assisted Living Communities

    0.00 out of 0 votes

Image via Pexels What Seniors Need to Know About Pet-Friendly Assisted Living Communities It probably comes as no surprise that pets can provide senior citizens with companionship and foster a sense of responsibility. Because of this, many senior living communities accommodate pets to serve as companions to residents. In this article, Enjoying Aging shares some tips to help you find the best assisted living community for both you and your pet.   How to Look for Pet-friendly Communities The internet is one of the best resources for finding a pet-friendly community. Go to your favorite search engine, like Google or Bing, type in "pet-friendly assisted living communities in [location]," and check the search results. You should see a list of pet-friendly communities in the area. Check each assisted living community's website for more information about living with pets in that community. Another way to find a pet-friendly senior community is to visit senior care websites, which offer a wealth of information about senior assisted living communities. Sites such as A Place For Mom, Caring.com, Enjoying Senior Living, and Senior Advice can help you compile a list of pet-friendly communities in your area. Learn each community's pet policy, and don't hesitate to ask questions so that you become well-informed.   Common Pet Policies You Need to Know Assisted living communities adhere to rules to ensure the residents' safety and comfort. Some communities may only allow certain breeds and sizes. For an extra fee, some communities can also provide personalized pet care, or they may work with third-party vendors to assist with grooming, dog walking, and feeding. Once you find a pet-friendly community that appeals to you, learn more about its policies on keeping pets to help you make an informed decision about whether to choose this as your new home.     Things to Consider Before Taking Your Pet to the Community Before transitioning to assisted living with your pet, make sure that your furry friend is trained and well-behaved. If your dog has a history of jumping on people or biting, it may be best to enroll your pup in dog training or obedience classes. Also, consider the environment the dog will be living in. If it's not used to indoor life, it may make more noise and look for ways to get out. Be realistic, as problems can still arise. Will you be able to properly care for the pet in the assisted living community? If not, does the community offer extra pet services? In some instances, it may be wiser for you to find a new home for your pet or consider a different senior community.   Enjoying Senior Living Find a Senior Living Facility Near You. Like your health insurance, pet insurance helps cover veterinary costs for your pet when it's injured or sick. Having pet insurance prevents you from having to dip into your savings to pay for expensive veterinary care. When choosing pet insurance, consider the premiums, deductibles, coverage level, and maximum pet age before making a decision. To avoid problems, carefully evaluate sample quotes, research and compare pet insurance coverage and considerations, and read customer reviews.   Stock Up on Supplies and Toys When considering pet supplies and toys, it's important to choose items that are safe and easy to use. First, safety is paramount. Look for products that are made from non-toxic materials and that don't have small parts that could pose a choking hazard. Second, ease of use is important. Seniors may have limited mobility or dexterity, so look for products that are easy to grab, hold, and manipulate. Third, consider the pet's individual needs. Some pets may need extra support for their joints, while others may need products that encourage mental stimulation or provide a sense of security. Lastly, don't forget to read reviews before making a purchase. This way, you know all the supplies and toys you're getting are worth the money you're spending on them.   Plan Accordingly Use the guide above to help you find a pet-friendly assisted living community, and smooth your transition by purchasing pet insurance. By stocking up on supplies (and reading reviews), looking into pet insurance, and ensuring the assisted living facility is right for you and your pet, you can rest easy knowing that your new home is perfect.   A special thank you to Lydia Chan at alzheimerscaregiver.net for contributing this article.   If you enjoyed this article, or have a topic you would like to suggest for a new article, please leave a comment in the form below.

  • 0 A Simple Senior Guide to Home-Buying

    0.00 out of 0 votes

Image via Pexels A Simple Senior Guide to Home-Buying Many seniors find themselves looking to buy a new home in retirement. Whether it's to be closer to grandchildren, to have less upkeep to manage, or to finally move to your dream locale, home-buying as a senior can look different than purchasing a home earlier in life. Use this guide from Enjoying Aging to help navigate senior home-buying challenges and get yourself into the home you desire without difficulty.   1. Determine What You Can Afford For many seniors, homes purchased in retirement are the result of a desire to downsize. This can be a positive for home-buying at this stage as it can mean a smaller mortgage is necessary and therefore easier to obtain. Use a home affordability calculator to help give you an idea of what kind of payment your budget can handle. Simply enter your annual gross income and your monthly debt, choose a down payment you can manage, and pick the term of your loan.   2. Find Appropriate Funding Getting a home loan comes with some unique challenges for seniors. The law prohibits lenders from discriminating against applicants due to age, but they can still take your age into consideration when deciding whether to approve your application. Lenders want to ensure that they will get their money back, so it'll be necessary to provide them with proof that you have good credit and either a high-earning job or enough money in savings or retirement to keep up with future mortgage payments. Additionally, you will probably have to accept a shorter loan term. For seniors, a 15-year fixed-rate loan is likely to be easier to get approved for.     3. Research the Local Housing Market Get an idea of whether the market is favoring sellers or buyers at the moment by using data about recent home purchases. Look up what homes have sold for in the past year as well as what they sold for prior to that to see how the amounts compare and to get an idea of how much you can expect to pay. It can be more expensive if you buy in an area that has a limited number of properties for sale as this favors sellers. If this is the case, you may want to consider putting off purchasing a home or looking in different areas with more robust options.   4. Look for Senior-Friendly Features Aging isn't easy for anyone, but homes have become much more senior-friendly in the last few years. There are many modifications available that you may want to look for when considering potential homes. Railings for stairs or replacing stairs with ramps can be helpful, as can smart home devices that allow seniors to operate things such as their televisions, lighting, and heating systems with voice alone. Bathroom modifications are particularly popular since so many falls occur in bathrooms. These can include safety bars to help to get in and out of the bath an easier process and toilets that are taller to make sitting bathtubs have a doorand standing up easier. Some allow entrance into the bath as though it were a shower to minimize the likelihood of accidents, and built-in benches in showers can make it easier to get clean without worrying about stability.   5. Consider Purchasing a Home Warranty If you're considering whether a home warranty is necessary, having one can provide peace of mind in knowing that if something goes wrong with a home appliance or system, there is someone who can fix it. A home warranty is an annual service contract that covers the repair or replacement of many of the most-used items in a home, such as the air conditioner, refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher. Most home warranties also cover the HVAC system, electrical system, plumbing, and water heater. Senior home buying can feel overwhelming, but with the right tools and planning, it can be a breeze. Research homes and what you can afford, shop for a mortgage, prioritize homes with senior-friendly features, and consider purchasing a home warranty.   6. Consider A Reverse Mortgage For A New Or Existing Home A reverse mortgage can be a valuable option for the right situation. For those who have paid at least fifty percent or more equity into their home, a reverse mortgage can solve many financial worries. In the example of downsizing, when your current home sells you can take part of that money and buy a new house. Then, as long as you pay fifty percent or more down on the new home you can live there with no payments and keep the rest of the money for emergencies. If you decide to stay in your current home and have fifty percent or more equity in your home you can get a reverse mortgage and make no more payments as long as you or your spouse continue to live in the home. There is a lot of misinformation going around about reverse mortgages, and it is not for everyone, but in the right situation, it can make a huge difference in the quality of life for you and your loved ones. To see if a reverse mortgage is right for you, visit Enjoying Aging/Reverse Mortgage for more information.   7. Will You Need The Help Of A Realtor? Regardless of your choices, it is always best to seek the advice of a professional. A realtor can help with selecting a new home, but remember, they only make money if you buy, so their primary motivation is to sell you a home. A mortgage professional can advise you on different mortgage options, but again, they only make money if you take out a loan. A financial advisor can review your situation, help you understand your options, and point you in the right direction. In many cases, they will be able to refer you to a person who can help you with whatever decision you make.   A special thank you to Lydia Chan at alzheimerscaregiver.net for contributing this article.   If you enjoyed this article, or have a topic you would like to suggest for a new article, please leave a comment in the form below. • 0 Common Signs That It May Be Time for Senior Assisted Living

    0.00 out of 0 votes

Photo via Unsplash   Common Signs That It May Be Time for Senior Assisted Living As your senior loved ones get older, you might have to consider moving them into assisted living. But how do you know when it's the right time? Often, there is no clear and definitive sign that a senior needs daily care, but you can keep an eye out for some common indicators and red flags. Certain behaviors, physical limitations, vision loss, and mental health conditions can signal that moving into assisted living would be beneficial. Recent Falls or Other Injuries Due to a variety of medical and age-related factors, household injuries are unfortunately common among seniors, especially those living alone. Injuries from falls can affect a senior's quality of life significantly, limiting their activities and socialization opportunities while increasing their risk of falling again. Full-time care in an assisted living facility can help your loved one avoid injury in the future. Your aging loved one might also be experiencing significant vision loss due to cataracts or macular degeneration. If you notice behavioral changes like grabbing onto furniture, increased falls, or squinting, or if you notice more bruises that could be from bumping into unseen objects, take your loved one to be checked by their eye care professional.     Trouble Performing Daily Activities Is your loved one able to cook, clean, bathe, do laundry, maintain their home, and tackle other activities of daily living? Seniors who have trouble with these tasks may suffer rapid weight gain or loss, increased risk of infection, loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Keep an eye out for signs that your loved one may be struggling with their daily activities. An empty fridge, an unusually unkempt home, an overgrown yard, and new body odors may signal that your senior loved one could use some help with their daily living tasks. In some cases, a grocery delivery service (or picking up groceries yourself) can help your loved one. In other cases, such as dealing with cleaning around the house and backyard, you're better off hiring some assistance.   Isolation and Loneliness If your senior loved one lives alone, they may be experiencing the negative effects of isolation. Sadly, loneliness can increase the rate of mental and physical decline in old age. Seniors often experience isolation when they lose their ability to drive or develop mobility difficulties, or when long-time friends move out of their neighborhood. Some signs that your loved one may be experiencing loneliness include sleeplessness, increased spending, loss of appetite, and a change in the frequency of phone calls. Fortunately, moving into an assisted living community will provide your loved one with numerous socialization opportunities so they can avoid the threat of isolation and loneliness.   How to Talk About Assisted Living If you think assisted living is right for your loved one, it's time to talk about it. These can be very tough conversations to have. Assisted Living Today recommends broaching the subject when your loved one is feeling happy and relaxed and there are close friends and family around for support. Try not to push the subject if your loved one gets upset. You can always bring it up again at a later date. Think of your first conversation as a way to plant the seed and get the ball rolling on further discussions. Most importantly, don't tell your loved one that you made this decision for them already. You might have an easier time convincing a reluctant senior to consider assisted living if you approach your conversation as a negotiation and do some research and gather information before beginning your discussion. Look up assisted living communities in your area and find out what alternatives are available, such as adult day care services or accessibility solutions for aging in place. Be prepared to answer any questions or concerns your loved one might have about moving. These resources can help you kick off your research: 7 Benefits of Assisted Living How to Manage Your Expenses While in Assisted Living How to Make a Home Safe for Your Aging Parent   Assisted living facilities provide assistance with all kinds of daily activities, from cooking to bathing, which can be an enormous help to seniors and their family caregivers. Still, it's very difficult to confront the idea that your loved one may need to move into assisted living. While it may be tempting to put this decision off, for now, you'll have a much easier time planning and discussing your options without pressing time constraints. Planning ahead will ensure you make the best possible decision!   A special thank you to Lydia Chan at alzheimerscaregiver.net for contributing this article.   If you enjoyed this article, or have a topic you would like to suggest for a new article, please leave a comment in the form below.     Content Marketing Offers the Highest Return On Investment Online, or content marketing and advertising, is currently the second-highest method of promoting businesses following only Television which, for now, remains in the number one position. • 0 Starting a Home-Based Business as a Senior: Strategies for Success

    0.00 out of 0 votes

Image: Pexels   There are nearly 32 million small businesses in the United States, about half of which are home-based. If you're a senior interested in launching a company, a home-based business is an excellent option. Along with providing flexibility, they don't typically require a lot of capital. Plus, working from home may be ideal for seniors with mobility issues. Considering that 20 percent of seniors have mobility challenges, that's a point you should not overlook. With the right preparation, seniors can launch incredibly successful home-based businesses. If you're thinking about becoming an entrepreneur, here's what you need to know.   Take the Time to Sharpen Your Business Skills While it's tempting to jump right in and launch your company, it's usually best to spend some time sharpening your business skills if you didn't run a business before retirement. That way, you'l have a strong foundation, ensuring you can successfully navigate the steps involved. As a home-based business owner, you'll need to be ready for the financial responsibilities. Expense tracking, paying taxes, and invoicing aren't always easy to manage. Plus, you may need inventory management knowledge, resource planning expertise, and customer relationship management experience to ensure you thrive. If you need to sharpen your business skills, consider enrolling in an online MBA program. You'll expand your knowledge in key areas, including strategy, management, and more. Plus, you'll learn about leadership and self-assessment, ensuring you have everything you need to succeed.   Keep Your Lifestyle in Mind As a senior, there's a good chance you don't want to spend 40+ hours per week focused on your home-based business. Instead, you probably prefer finding the right work-life balance, ensuring you can bring in some income while still enjoying your golden years. If that's the case, you'll want to pick a home-based business that won't take over your entire life. Precisely what that looks like may depend on your skillset and the kind of work you'd like to do. If you're not opposed to spending your working hours at a computer, multiple freelancing options could serve as starting points. For example, you could become a freelance consultant, offering your expertise from your previous career to other businesses. If you'd rather make something and are a bit crafty, you could sell your creations online. If you want to remain active, launching a dog walking service could be a wise move. Take your preferences and interests into account. That way, you can find an option that keeps you engaged, brings in a steady income, and provides you with the flexibility you need to thrive.   Get Ready to Market Your Company Generally speaking, marketing will be an essential part of the equation. What you need to do may depend on the type of business you run. If you're planning on freelancing, you can market yourself on online job platforms. You can set up profiles outlining your services, upload samples to showcase your expertise, and set pricing. Launching a website is a wise move for any business. Couple that with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) best practices and you can generate interest and connect with customers. Similarly, marketing through social media is an effective strategy. Sign up on platforms that work best for your company type. In many cases, Facebook is a solid starting point. Beyond that, you may want to venture into Instagram if your offerings are highly visual, such as custom-made products. YouTube can also be worthwhile if you'd benefit from video marketing. By focusing on those areas first, you can get a solid foundation. Then, as your company grows, you can branch out if needed, ensuring you can secure the customers you need to succeed. If you're a senior not ready to retire full-time, starting a home business could be a terrific opportunity. Use the tips above to achieve your goals and become a successful entrepreneur.   A special thank you to Dan Hall at dadschange.com for contributing this article.   Content Marketing Offers the Highest Return On Investment Online, or content marketing and advertising, is currently the second-highest method of promoting businesses following only Television which, for now, remains in the number one position.
